I'm Renonys, and here is where I document all my attempts at making period type things

Cranach Saxony Gown: Fabric

On Monday my samples arrived from www.puresilks.us. Well, sort of. I ordered two samples because that's what you get for US$10, but I got three samples. One of them was this one, which was one that I wanted, but neither of the other two were the other one I ordered. They both had the same design, but one is a sort of silver with red motifs, and the other one was this:

Which I either hadn't come across before or dismissed it because I was looking for fabrics with a darker motif than ground fabric. It took me ages to find this fabric in the online store because all the swatches were labelled with completely random product codes that don't match the ones on the website. I'm not sure whether they have a different way of labelling the fabrics in the warehouse and couldn't find the one I wanted, or if they'd run out and decided to send me two similar ones instead. Or if they think I care more about the quality and feel of the fabric than the colours. It would have been nice to have some sort of note or email from them explaining why they couldn't send me the correct order. I can't decide whether or not to kick up a fuss and get them to send me the one I originally wanted free of charge, because after looking at this other one for the past week I think it might be the one that I want. It's actually very similar to the fabric of the goldhaube that I want to make (on the right):

Another thing that is evident from the swatches is that this fabric frays like anything. I am going to need to do something with the edges when I cut it out, and I'm definitely going to need to back it with something as it's so thin. I might go to Spotlight and buy some of their cheap cotton/linen fabric for this. Hopefully the silk brocade will be able to withstand the beading I want to do, but if not, the silk dupion I originally bought for this project actually matches the brocade in colour. The gold is very close to the gold of the motif, and it's shot with red which is similar to the ground weave of the brocade. The dupion feels less delicate than the brocade, so I might end up using that instead for some bits.

I was also pondering what sort of linen I would use for the hemd, and came to the conclusion that the fabric-store.com ILO20 linen is probably suitable, and anything else would require further investigation. Then I decided to look through my linen pile and I found yards of it. I also have some other white linen that feels quite nice, but I can't remember where I got it from. I'm going to use stuff I already have because it's cheap and one less thing I need to research. I'll need to decide what sort of sleeves I want on my gown before I make the hemd, because that will have implications for what sort of sleeves I need on my hemd.
